Berlin – Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is colorful, but politically it has a clear color: It doesn’t get greener. Since Hans-Christian Ströbele in 2002, the Greens have always won their only direct mandate for the Bundestag here. In the elections for the House of Representatives in Berlin, the party won in 2011 and 2016 in the Kiez in front of the SPD and the Left and has been the district mayor since 2006. Der Spiegel called the Bundestag candidate Kevin Kratzsch the “probably most hopeless CDU applicant in the republic” because he competes in the statistically youngest, smallest and narrowest district of Berlin, where the second largest number of migrants live.
In the green district there are gray and colorful apartment blocks, for example between Kottbusser Tor and Prinzenstraße. Hoda Alwan is standing in front of one of them. The 20-year-old, Iraqi father and Moroccan mother, was born and raised here in the neighborhood. She says: “I’m running for the CDU, in ninth place on the list.”
