On the VfB fans’ side, a camera in the goal-line technology was broken, so the penalty shootout in the Supercup took place in front of the Bayer curve. This led to anger.

Sebastian Hoeneß was furious. The VfB Stuttgart coach was not only annoyed about the victory that had once again been wasted, he also took issue with the penalty shootout that was awarded for what he considered to be the wrong goal. He said that his captain Atakan Karazor had told him that there had been no choice of sides. It had simply been decided “to let it take place on the Leverkusen side because a camera wasn’t working.”

Following Stuttgart’s 3:4 defeat in the Supercup penalty shootout, a spokesman for the German Football League (DFL) confirmed that a camera in the goal-line technology on the VfB fans’ side was defective. “From our point of view, that’s bitter. I think that does change things a little,” said Hoeneß, who also admitted: “But it can’t be changed now.”

However, the anger in the Stuttgart camp was even greater that VfB had to leave Leverkusen empty-handed again after the already thrilling duels of the previous season. “What pisses me off the most? When you play with one more man and then you concede such a crappy goal,” complained national player Deniz Undav, who had put VfB in the lead with his first touch of the ball after being substituted, before the equalizer came in the 88th minute.

“It’s bitter. We were once again very close. It felt like we had to take our hands off the trophy at the last second,” said Hoeneß. He was also annoyed with a Leverkusen player and the mob formation after the end of the game. “It was another player who felt he had to make us feel like we had lost,” said Hoeneß: “He made a fool of us.”

He did not say who it was. However, TV briefly showed Hoeneß getting into an argument with national player Florian Wirtz on the pitch. The coach later stressed, however, that the DFB star was not the professional who had triggered the situation. “Flo had nothing to do with that,” said Hoeneß.
