Sandro Wagner is apparently attracting the interest of a Bundesliga club. Now there has even been an inquiry from the DFB. However, DFB sports director Rudi Völler is still planning to use the assistant coach.

According to a report in the “Bild” newspaper, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim is considering hiring Sandro Wagner as head coach in the future. According to the report, the Kraichgau team has now even asked the DFB whether the 36-year-old could be cleared for the job. However, an immediate takeover of the coaching position is currently not an issue. Wagner is currently the national team’s assistant coach and is working on the staff of national coach Julian Nagelsmann with a view to the World Cup in two years.

The current coach at Hoffenheim is Pellegrino Matarazzo. The 46-year-old is not without controversy within the club, and his contract expires in the summer of 2025. Wagner will begin training to become a football coach in December, after which he could take over a Bundesliga club. A quick takeover of such a position currently seems rather unrealistic.

DFB sports director Rudi Völler did not want to confirm Hoffenheim’s request to the association to “Bild”, but the 64-year-old knows that clubs are interested in Wagner. “I’m always in contact with Sandro, we recently sat together at the national team and talked about his future,” said Völler about the former professional, who once played for TSG Hoffenheim. There are “one or two requests every now and then,” said Völler about Wagner: “But Sandro feels very comfortable with us and is enjoying his role.”

From the DFB’s side, there is currently no reason to change anything about Nagelsmann’s coaching team. “At least until the 2026 World Cup,” Völler confirmed.
