The influence of climate change on our lives is noticeable in many areas – even when planning holidays. This became clear again last summer at the latest, when forest fires, extreme drought, water shortages and heat records, especially in southern Europe, dominated the headlines for weeks.

The reported last August stern about how the climate change caused by heat waves influences the holiday planning of many people. Scandinavian countries in particular have become increasingly popular as holiday destinations in recent years. Nevertheless, southern holiday countries such as Italy, Greece or Spain continue to enjoy great popularity.

Southern holiday destinations are getting warmer

Last November, a climate report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the EU’s Climate Change Service showed that over the past 30 years, temperatures in Europe have risen the fastest of any continent. Especially in the southern European holiday countries, warmer summers mean that temperatures will increasingly rise to unbearable levels of over 40 degrees. At the same time, masses of tourists are an additional burden for regions plagued by water shortages.

It will probably be very hot again this summer in southern Europe. Spain and Portugal already had the warmest April in their history, sometimes with temperatures of up to 40 degrees. Water is already scarce in many regions of Spain.

So it could be worth heading a little further north for this year’s summer vacation, because understandably many people don’t want to do without a vacation altogether. In Germany, too, temperatures have been rising for years due to climate change, but are still in a more bearable range in comparison. Many northern European countries are not yet on the radar of many holidaymakers for a summer holiday – unjustifiably, because they have a lot to offer in terms of landscape and culture.
