SAG-AFTRA has given the green light to 39 independent productions to shoot during the Hollywood strike, after first confirming that they are not affiliated with the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) companies.

The list includes two projects from production company A24: “Mother Mary” starring Anne Hathaway and Mikaela Coel, as well as “Death of a Unicorn” starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega which is expected to start filming in Hungary.

Other films that will go ahead amid the strike include “The Rivals of Amziah King” starring Matthew McConaughey, “Flight Risk” directed by Mel Gibson, “Dust Bunny” with Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver, “Bride Hard” with Rebel Wilson and the TV series about the life of Jesus, “The Chosen.”

The list of 39 projects was posted on Tuesday. Some of these films have already been completed, but a special declaration from the actors will be required to promote them.

Productions agree to abide by SAG-AFTRA’s terms during contract negotiations.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, executive director of the union, said in a teleconference that actors are encouraged to participate in such films or series.

As he said, if independent productions proceed on the Union’s terms, that contradicts the studios’ argument of “unrealistic” union demands.

On Tuesday, the Union held its first strike in 43 years, against film and television companies. The most important issues on which actors and screenwriters “fight” are the threatening – for their work – artificial intelligence, the invasion of streaming services that conquer the entertainment industry, the review of salaries and their increase.
