- The American actor James Earl Jones has died.
- He gained worldwide fame as the voice of the “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader.
- Earl Jones passed away on Monday at the age of 93, as his agent reported according to several news agencies.
- He had suffered from diabetes for many years. Now he has died surrounded by his family at home.
His strong presence will be remembered on stage and in television. Even in films where only his voice was heard, he shaped the atmosphere in a special way. He also lent his voice to Mufasa in “The Lion King.”
Jones was born in 1931 in Arkabutla, Mississippi. He first appeared on a New York stage in 1957 and became particularly known as a Shakespearean actor in the following years. His breakthrough came in the 1970s with the boxing drama “The Great White Hope.”
Jones had significant roles in Stanley Kubrick’s satire “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” in “Conan the Barbarian” alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, and in the ’80s comedy “Coming to America” next to Eddie Murphy. Throughout his career, he won the Tony Award three times, including one for his lifetime achievement, as well as two Emmys, a Grammy, and an honorary Oscar for his lifetime achievement.
