The Holzapfel butcher’s shop was founded in 1815. Now it is facing closure. The 80 employees will probably all lose their jobs.

The traditional bratwurst manufacturer Fleischerei Holzapfel from Thuringia has filed for bankruptcy and is facing closure. The portal “Thüringen24” and the “Merkur” newspaper, among others, were the first to report on the matter. The company, which has existed since 1815, is forced to close its doors due to massive economic difficulties. This means the end of a tradition in the butcher’s trade that has lasted for over 200 years and a significant loss for the regional economy and culture.

According to the insolvency administrators, the insolvency is mainly due to sharply increased raw material prices and a significant drop in demand. The butcher’s shop has been struggling with financial problems for some time, which have been exacerbated by the ongoing cost increases. High energy prices and inflation have further worsened the situation, so that the company could ultimately no longer bear the economic burden.

The insolvency affects around 80 employees who will now lose their jobs. The Holzapfel butcher’s shop operates nine branches in northern Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, which will be closed as part of the insolvency proceedings. Employees have already been informed of the impending closures and discussions have been initiated with the relevant employment offices to organize support for the employees.

Despite loyal customers, the butcher’s shop was unable to withstand the economic challenges. Rising production costs, particularly for energy and raw materials, as well as falling demand for meat products due to changing consumer habits contributed significantly to the financial decline.
