“Home training is related to time dilation in psychology.” I run a home training channel with 3.4 million subscribers, and this is the first answer I give whenever people ask why I have more subscribers and a higher number of views than other channels.

The home training channel I run uploads a variety of exercise routines with variations of routines, times, and topics so that viewers can follow them in real time. The main focus of running the channel is on how to enable people to complete difficult and long exercises to the end. And at this point, various elements related to psychology are applied.

In psychology, the concept of ‘time dilation’ mentioned above refers to the phenomenon in which people feel that time passes relatively slowly when they are in pain or experiencing difficulties. When performing an exercise routine that is more difficult than your physical strength can handle, everyone has probably had the experience at least once that no matter how much you look at the clock, it’s only a little while since you started. You experience time dilation. Conversely, when playing games or watching social media videos such as short forms, time contraction may occur, where time passes in an instant.

From the perspective of providing a home training video, the following two things need to be satisfied. The first is the effectiveness of the exercise, and the second is to add interesting elements to the time that feels psychologically slow, causing time contraction. By adding a timer to the video as a visual element, having a model exercising periodically shout out motivational comments, and providing information related to the current exercise through subtitles, viewers can focus on the exercise while receiving a variety of visual and auditory information. As a result, you become unable to perceive all the details, and you experience time contraction, where you feel like time is passing quickly.

When exercising in this way, the body automatically follows the model’s exercise scenes displayed on the screen, so the amount of exercise itself is guaranteed, but it is more fun and feels like time passes more quickly than when there was relatively no information. The author refers to this effect as gamification. As you watch the timer and perform each exercise one by one, you feel like time passes quickly like a game, which gives you a competitive spirit, and when you complete all the exercises, you feel a sense of accomplishment as if you have cleared (completed) the mission.

In this way, home training videos add various elements that make difficult tasks feel relatively easier than when exercising alone, which can be helpful in continuing to exercise daily or periodically. If you desperately feel the need to exercise, but find it difficult to start because the process feels difficult and too long, home training videos can be a good starting point for exercise. Today, I prepared a 30-minute exercise routine that reflects these elements. Scientists were especially invited to perform exercises together and listen to explanations about exercise and hormones. I hope that today’s routine will serve as an opportunity to improve the perception that exercise is difficult and gain the confidence to perform consistently.
