Bengaluru ∙ Three people, including a woman from Bengaluru, have been arrested in connection with the death of Lingayat mutt Swami Basavalinga, found hanging inside the mutt. The police found that Swami Basavalinga was a victim of honeytrap. It was found that the opponents were hounding him because of an obscene video call with a woman. After this, the police arrested three people including the woman.

In a 2-page suicide note found in Swami’s room after his death, some people accused him of defaming him and trying to remove him from his post.

The media had reported that the woman had recorded and kept the video calls with Swami Basavalinga using a screen recording system and the woman and her associates had threatened the Swami to release the four obscene videos recorded in this way. Meanwhile, Swamy revealed in his suicide note that an unknown young woman had done it to him.

In 1997, Basavalinga was appointed as abbot. In Kanjungal Bunde, Ramanagara, Karnataka, last Monday morning, Swami was found hanging dead when he did not come out of the room even after the puja time.

Basavalinga Swamy is the third abbot to commit suicide in Karnataka in a year. In December, the abbot of Chilume Math, the main Math in Ramanagara, committed suicide. Health reasons were behind the suicide. Last month, Basava Siddalinga Swami, head of the Sri Gurumadivaleshwar Mutt in Belagavi, was also found hanging.
