Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo criticized the opposition party, saying, “It’s been a year since the rumors about the Fukushima nuclear contamination were spread. What are you aiming at by inciting the people with rumor politics and causing chaos in the country?”

On the 24th, Mayor Hong wrote on his Facebook page, “The mad cow disease rumor threw the country into chaos, and not a single politician took responsibility. Where have all the people gone who wore blond wigs and burned themselves with the THAAD rumor, and even incited people by saying that Seongju melons were THAAD melons and therefore uneatable?”

He added, “It’s been a year since the rumors about the Fukushima nuclear contamination were spread, and now they are saying that the contamination will come in 5 or 10 years. What are you trying to achieve by inciting the people with rumor politics and causing chaos in the country? Do you really have to do politics like that?” Mayor Hong’s recent claim is interpreted as support for the content of the briefing held by the Presidential Office on the 23rd.

Earlier, presidential spokesperson Jeong Hye-jeon said in a briefing on the 23rd, “The 24th marks the first anniversary of the opposition party spreading the Fukushima horror story. The government has been fighting the horror story for the past year,” and “even though the Fukushima horror story has been revealed to be a false propaganda without scientific basis, the opposition party, which is the source, is acting irresponsibly without apologizing to the public.”

He said, “The Yoon Seok-yeol government believed that the only way to overcome the rumors was through objective and scientific verification,” and “If it weren’t for the opposition party’s absurd rumors about nuclear waste and a second Pacific War, 1.6 trillion won that would not have been spent was invested in this process.”

He continued, “If the opposition party had trusted the scientific evidence and done politics for the people’s livelihood rather than dividing the nation, this would have been tax money that could have been used for the socially disadvantaged,” and emphasized, “Reflection begins with an honest apology and a promise to prevent a recurrence. I hope that they promise to stop spreading rumors that divide the nation, from mad cow disease to THAAD and now to Fukushima, and apologize to the nation even now.”

In addition, the Democratic Party of Korea responded, “The position announced by the Office of the President on the first anniversary of the discharge of contaminated water from Fukushima is full of accusations and attacks on the opposition party, including rumors and false propaganda,” and asked, “On what basis do you claim that the contaminated water discharged from Fukushima by Japan is safe?”

Cho Seung-rae, senior spokesperson for the Democratic Party, said in a written briefing, “It will be at least 4-5 years before the discharged contaminated water reaches our ocean, and it will be 10 years at the earliest. Has the Yoon Seok-yeol government time-traveled to 5 or 10 years in the meantime?”

He also said, “It is shocking that the government, which has been focusing only on promoting safety without taking any measures to ensure the health and safety of the people, is planning to pass on 1.6 trillion won in promotional expenses to the opposition party.”
