The Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) film festival is considered one of the oldest in the world. Big names in film art will be honored there again this year.

Australian actor and Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush will receive a lifetime achievement award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (July 1-9). At the closing gala in the Czech spa town, the 70-year-old accepted the crystal globe for extraordinary services to world cinema.

The organizers announced this on Tuesday. The films “Shine – The Path into the Light”, “The King’s Speech” and “Quills – Power of Obsession” will be shown in a retrospective.

Hollywood actor Benicio del Toro was also awarded the crystal globe. In 2001 he received an Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in the drug drama “Traffic”. Most recently, the 55-year-old played the painter Moses Rosenthaler in Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch”.

The Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) Film Festival is considered one of the oldest in the world and is known for its laid-back atmosphere. While some stay in luxury hotels, other visitors spend the night in a large tent city. Karlsbad is located almost 70 kilometers south of Chemnitz and almost 100 kilometers east of Bayreuth. (dpa)
