A 19-year-old driver on his provisional license has been charged following a tragic accident in Sydney’s north-west that resulted in the deaths of a 33-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child. A senior official stated that emergency services responded to reports of a pedestrian struck at the entrance of a car park on George street in Hornsby shortly after 8:00 PM on Friday. Initial reports indicated a silver Kia station wagon struck the pedestrian after being rear-ended by a white BMW.

According to police, the driver of the station wagon had slowed down to allow the woman, who was eight months pregnant, to cross the road when the BMW allegedly collided with the rear of the vehicle. The impact propelled the station wagon forward, striking the pedestrian. Paramedics instantly provided on-scene treatment before transporting the woman to Westmead Hospital in critical condition. Despite their efforts, both the woman and her unborn baby succumbed to their injuries.
Both drivers involved – the driver of the station wagon and the 19-year-old BMW driver – were uninjured. They were transported to Hornsby Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing, standard procedure in such incidents. Authorities confirmed there were no passengers in either vehicle.
Arrest and Charges
Police arrested the 19-year-old man at his home in Wahroonga at 12:45 AM on Saturday. He has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, and causing loss of a fetus. He was subsequently denied bail and is scheduled to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
