Tragic Incident on Ferry to Sweden: Puppies Euthanized Due to Lack of Passports

In a heartbreaking incident, a group of puppies were euthanized along with their mother at a port in Sweden. The owner, Nada Bosanac, was returning from her annual holiday in Serbia with her two dogs, Lexi and Lora, when the unfortunate incident occurred. Lora, who was pregnant, gave birth to the puppies on the ferry from Gdansk in Poland to Nynäshamn, Sweden.

The puppies arrived earlier than Bosanac expected, causing her to be shocked by their sudden arrival. However, upon docking at the port, the dogs encountered a major problem – their passports were not in order. Bosanac, who had traveled with her dogs several times before without any issues, was taken aback by this turn of events.

The Swedish Board of Agriculture, responsible for enforcing animal import regulations, made a devastating decision. They ruled that the puppies, who lacked proper documentation, as well as the mother dog, Lora, would be euthanized. A veterinarian was dispatched to carry out the euthanization.

Bosanac expressed her anguish at the situation, saying, “Lora was so happy and proud of the puppies, but then she got the shot. The vet told me to put the puppies on the ground, but I wanted them to be with their mother one last time. I put them next to her, and they started to cry even though she was already dead.” The puppies were euthanized soon after.

Erik Ringström, an infection control officer at the Swedish Agency for Agriculture, explained that dogs cannot travel before they are a week old or within a week of giving birth to puppies. As a result, neither Lora nor her puppies could be transported back to Serbia or be placed in quarantine.

Bosanac had the option to return to Poland with Lexi, the male dog, to save him from euthanization. However, no available ferries would depart until the following day, and thus, Lexi too was euthanized. Bosanac recalled her final moments with Lexi, saying, “He noticed that something was wrong. But I took him for a walk and gave him hot dogs. He licked my tears, and I kissed him before he got the shot.”

The incident has raised questions about the owner’s responsibility in ensuring that their dogs’ documents are in order. Ringström explained that stricter regulations are imposed on certain countries, including Serbia, due to lack of control over the rabies situation. Bosanac claimed that all the necessary documentation was in order, except for the fact that her dogs had Serbian passports instead of Swedish ones.

Bosanac, devastated by the loss of her beloved pets, expressed her grief, stating, “That was my only joy. They have taken it from me. I don’t really want to live anymore. I have been crying for three days. My heart is broken. They were like my children.”

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of following regulations and ensuring proper documentation when traveling with pets. The Swedish Agricultural Agency maintains that these rules exist to protect animals and people in Sweden from rabies, a disease that cannot be cured.
