Drilling is too deep on an oil rig – with catastrophic consequences. In “Still Wakes The Deep” players face the evil dangers from the deep sea.

The massive silhouette of an oil rig off the coast of Scotland slowly rises from a wall of fog and pushes itself resolutely against the swaying waters of the dark North Sea. The first few seconds of the new first-person horror game “Still Wakes The Deep” draw you into a threatening atmosphere and lay the foundation for a survival story far out at sea.

The story centers around Cameron “Caz” McLeary. It is Christmas in the 1970s and he is reading the last words of a letter from his wife in his cabin. They paint a picture of a broken marriage. Through the eyes of the Scottish electrician, we get to know the rest of the crew and the surroundings of the lonely oil rig.

The plot quickly picks up speed. After problems with the drilling rig, Boss Rennick decides to continue the work despite all warnings: a fatal mistake. A changing substance rises from the depths of the sea, glowing in iridescent colors, spreading chaos and destruction.

The deadly organic anomaly transforms the oil rig into a mysterious labyrinth full of dangers. From now on, players must move as quietly as possible through dark corridors and discover alternative routes to escape the horror.

“Still Wakes The Deep” impresses with its realistic textures and attention to detail. Without any weapons or supernatural abilities, you have to prove your courage and keep a cool head.

This is the only way to overcome the flooded corridors and storm-lashed decks of the oil rig. Although the only way forward is on foot, there are many different means of movement, including climbing, swimming and running.

Paranoia, isolation and the brutal fate of the human crew: the game draws its inspiration from well-known horror classics such as “The Thing”. Similar to the 1982 film, a group of professionals, cut off and alone, fight against a superhuman and seemingly invincible enemy.

Developed by The Chinese Room and known for their work on atmospheric games such as Dear Esther and Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, Still Wakes The Deep follows on seamlessly from its predecessors.

The howling of the wind, roaring machines and the roaring sea contribute significantly to the eerie atmosphere. Whether it’s fear of drowning, fear of heights or claustrophobia: danger lurks around every corner.

With a playing time of around six hours, the game is not particularly long, but it offers all kinds of challenges and a deep story in an impressive setting.

“Still Wakes The Deep” is available for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The recommended age rating is 16 years.
