CHENNAI- The horticulture department plans to spend 48 crore rupees to ensure availability of small onions and tomatoes without shortage.

Small onions are cultivated in districts including Perambalur, Namakkal, Salem, Tuticorin, Trichy, Dindigul and Tirupur.

Tomato cultivation is done in districts including Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Dindigul, Theni, Tirupur, Coimbatore.

Due to lack of production as required, onions and tomatoes are imported from other states.

In Tamil Nadu, the prices of onions and tomatoes go up when the yield decreases.

Therefore, the horticulture industry has launched a new initiative to ensure that small onions and tomatoes are available throughout the year without shortage.

For this, sowing machines, storage structures, harvesting machines, onion leaf extractors are provided to farmers at subsidized rates in onion growing districts.

For this, 29 crore rupees are to be spent. Through this, it is expected that the supply of onion to the market will be stabilized.

Similarly, in tomato producing districts, various assistance is being provided to the farmers from sowing to harvesting and value addition.

For this, 19 crore rupees have been allocated. Even during the off-season, tomato planting work is planned. Through this, it is possible to get tomatoes throughout the year.
