Puyo, February 13,

The Puyo General Hospital, an establishment of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), Pastaza province, performed for the first time a minimally invasive procedure known as Fine Needle Puncture (FNA). It consists of extracting a sample of thyroid nodules to verify if they are benign or malignant and to provide timely treatment.

The main advantages of fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy are the immediacy of the procedure (20 to 30 minutes), as well as the technique that does not require stitches. The patient returns home the same day.

“This technique is considered safe because it is not necessary to make a cut in the skin, it is done with a needle and does not leave any scar, providing immediate results,” said Karla Gaibor, an endocrinologist at the health home.

Deysi Freire, a patient who benefited from the PAFF procedure, stated that she agreed to this examination immediately. “In 24 hours they gave me the result of the biopsy, which has allowed me to take the treatment quickly”

This technique, developed in the hospital, is carried out every Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. It is aimed at patients who have thyroid nodules or lumps in the neck that have clinical or ultrasound criteria for suspicion of malignancy.

This health center in the Amazon, in its commitment to guarantee comprehensive health care for the population, has become the first public hospital to offer this procedure for the detection of thyroid nodules.
