Hospital Guayaquil performed more than 10 thousand chemotherapies to cancer patients – Ministry of Public Health

The Hospital de Especialidades Guayaquil Dr. Abel Gilbert Pontón, an establishment of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), through its oncology service, provides comprehensive care to patients suffering from different types of cancer, including: prostate, breast, cervix, stomach, thyroid, liver, lung, among others.

Cancer is a disease that consists of the uncontrolled growth and spread of cells. This process can start anywhere in the body, causing a tumor, which may invade the surrounding tissue until it metastasizes in the body.

During 2022, the oncology service of the Guayaquil Hospital performed 10,268 chemotherapies and provided 17,217 outpatient care, 58 for emergencies and 747 for hospitalization.

Currently, the health facility has the supply of medicines and supplies necessary to carry out each of the oncological treatments.

“At a private hospital they told me that the cancer treatment I have was going to cost about $50,000. It was so that I decided to come to the Guayaquil Hospital, where I have been treating myself free of charge for fourteen months. Thank God and the specialists there are advances”, mentioned Yolanda P., beneficiary of the oncology service of this health home.

Patients who are cared for by the multidisciplinary team that makes up the oncology area of ​​this health entity are referred from second-level hospitals or MSP health centers.

The Ministry of Health, through its specialty hospitals nationwide, provides comprehensive and timely care to people with catastrophic illnesses.
