  • Although both focus on health care, the training of a doctor and a veterinarian is different.
  • A stray dog that had necrotic tissue from a profuse wound in its nasal area received radiotherapy at a human hospital.
  • The equipment used was a state-of-the-art linear accelerator, but it is exclusively for humans with cancer.

An old saying goes that “never do good things that seem bad.” In fact there is now a hospital that is going through a strong controversy because it provided radiotherapy to a dog. The action has generated a debate because some applaud what has been done, while others have shown their discontent.

A doctor and a veterinarian have different training

Everything starts from the difference that exists between the attention to a human and an animal. Since their training they are different disciplines because doctors are created for the first and veterinarians for the second.

Back in the present, the staff of the Valdivia Base Hospital in Chile staged an unusual event. For years there has been a stray dog that lives in the surrounding areas of the hospital. He is described as a calm and affectionate canine, for which he has earned the love of both medical personnel and neighbors in the area.

The problem arose a few days ago when some doctors detected that the dog had necrotic tissue due to a profuse wound in its nasal area. After analyzing his condition, a decision had to be made that some have applauded but others affirm that it was wrong.

A humanitarian action that could have legal consequences

All part of the fact that the staff of the hospital decided to provide radiotherapy service to the dog. Because the place has a state-of-the-art linear accelerator for cancer patients, it was used in the animal.

In this regard, there are some important clarifications that the hospital has made. First, the service was provided outside of patient care hours. It also mentions that the decision was made on the initiative of people who were hospitalized. For the same reason, at no time was it left without service to humans.

What started as a noble gesture reached state authorities. At that time, the regional ministerial secretary of Health in Los Ríos, Cristina Ojeda, showed her rejection. She added that current legislation clearly states that hospitals can only provide care to humans.

“All the permits and authorizations delivered by the health authority to the hospital are related to care, benefits and treatments that must be delivered to people, human beings.”

Due to the above, a investigation against the Valdivia Base Hospital for offering radiotherapy to the dog. Although the canine never stopped caring for humans, the biggest problem is that the hospital does not have permission to provide service to animals.

On the other hand, various animal protection associations have criticized the authorities. Despite what the laws indicate, they affirm that the criterion must be first. For this reason, they defend the act and have requested to stop the investigation against the hospital.
