Medical Association to Take Preemptive Measures Against COVID-19 Resurgence
The Korean Medical Association (KMA) announced on August 9th that it plans to form a ‘COVID-19 Countermeasures Expert Committee’ to address the expected resurgence of COVID-19. This comes in response to the rapid spread of the Omicron KP.3 variant, which has led to 861 hospitalized patients in the first week of August, a 9.5-fold increase from the previous month.
The association expressed concern that the actual number of confirmed cases is likely higher than reported, and that the current trend suggests continued increases throughout August. Additionally, other respiratory illnesses resembling COVID-19, such as whooping cough and Mycoplasma pneumonia, are also spreading, making diagnosis and treatment challenging.
The KMA stated that it will proactively develop its own response measures in light of the government’s apparent lack of guidance and action. The association called on citizens to take precautions such as wearing masks in crowded places and maintaining good hand hygiene.
