Paris – conscious
French police announced on Friday that five hostages were being held in Arles prison in southern France.
The (INA) correspondent, citing “sources in the French police, said that a prisoner carrying a white weapon was being held by four nurses and a guard,” adding that “the prisoner had a record of psychological crises “.
He added, “French police forces sent to the scene the Regional and Security Intervention Teams (IRIS), which include members trained to intervene in hostage situations, as well as the French Special Forces ‘Raid’ unit .”
He explained, “This is not the first incident that the central prison in Arles has seen. It saw similar events in 2013 after a prisoner was held hostage for several hours and ended up surrendering himself to the authorities later.”
Arles prison is not the only one of its kind in French prisons to witness hostage situations. In May 2024, Aix-Luignes prison witnessed a hostage incident that left two people injured.
