Hosting COP29 in Azerbaijan is a very important continuation of the environmental agenda.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to Trend, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told journalists this on the sidelines of the 4th summit of the European Political Community in Oxford,

“This is a very important follow-up. We need to move in the right direction. We need to work towards the decisions that were made in Sharm el-Sheikh and the Emirates last year. So we need to continue this agenda, the commitments, take stock of what we are doing in the field of technology and energy, and Norway will be very much involved in this,” he told reporters.

Let us recall that in November this year, Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). The decision to do so was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Over the course of two weeks, Baku, becoming the center of the world, will host about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The convention has 198 parties. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.

It should be noted that the 4th Summit of the European Political Community is taking place at Blenheim Palace in Oxford. About 47 heads of state and government have been invited to take part in this EPC meeting.

The leaders discuss further support for Ukraine and common challenges. The roundtable discussions cover topics such as migration, energy, cooperation, defence and the protection of democracy. The European political community aims to develop political dialogue and cooperation to address issues of common interest and to strengthen the security, stability and prosperity of the European continent.
