Hosting COP29 in Azerbaijan opens up good opportunities for Pakistan as well.

As reported by Day.Az, the President of the Belt and Road Initiative for Sustainable Development, Ghaiser Nawab, told Trend about this.

“COP29 is not only an opportunity but also a global responsibility. We are also proud that Azerbaijan will host this event because we, as close brothers, perceive Azerbaijan’s success as our own success. Hosting COP29 in Azerbaijan opens up good opportunities for Pakistan as well. We can use this opportunity more effectively,” he said.

The Nawab noted that Pakistan has recently been badly affected by climate change and environmental degradation.

“Heat waves create a problem of food security. And at the same time, excessive rain creates a problem of floods. There are millions of people who are homeless and millions of people who cannot go to school. I think Pakistan can use this platform very effectively. When COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev visited Pakistan, I had the opportunity to meet him and also to share what the youth of Pakistan thinks about this and how we can involve the youth in this process,” he said.

As Navab said, Mukhtar Babayev assured that young people will have enough opportunity to talk about the problem of climate change and demonstrate their support for this global cause.

“We expect that many young people from Pakistan will come to Azerbaijan to tell the world community about our problems at COP29,” he added.

Nawab also noted that relations between the two countries are based on mutual trust, understanding, cultural similarities and brotherhood.

“Why not use this mutual brotherhood to increase trade turnover to more than several millions and billions,” he said.

Let us recall that in November this year, Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). The decision to do so was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Over the course of two weeks, Baku, becoming the center of the world, will host about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The convention has 198 parties. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
