It calls for “flexibility in setup time”. Europe’s goal of completely banning the sale of hot cars by 2035 will be “difficult” to meet, Renault chief Luca de Meo said, in interview with Les Échos (news belongs to the LVMH group, also owner of Le Parisien) published this Monday. “Move to 10% market share for EVs in twelve years (Electric vehicles, Editor’s Note) 100%, it’s really complicated,” explained Lucas de Meo to Les Échos and three titles in the European press.

“We need a little more flexibility in the time period,” he added, remembering that when the decision to ban the sale of hot electronics by 2035 was taken “the position of France and of the Renault Group rather than saying that 2035 is too early. and that instead we aim for 2040.”

“We are not on the right track yet”

“We are not yet on the right track to achieve 100% 100% electric cars in 2035. (…) However, we must not use the current slowdown in the market to reject the goal altogether. It would be a major strategic mistake,” reiterated the boss of Renault. Lucas de Meo reminds that the car industry has “invested tens of billions of euros in change” to electricity and we must not “throw them out the window”.

Also, “we must not deny progress” and “electricity in cars is part of progress,” he stressed. “The question is urgent,” explains Lucas de Meo, pointing out that “most countries have not exceeded the 7% share of the market in electric power to date.” “The ecosystem must move forward together, all together. This is what I’m talking about when I ask for flexibility and agility,” he explained.

In February, Lucas de Meo had already ruled that a reversal on the ban on petrol and diesel cars in 2035 would be acceptable but complicated. “I hope that the ban will take place soon, because I think we will not be able to do it without damaging every industry and every European car value chain,” he said at the Geneva motor show.

Finally for the boss of Renault, “the electric car is one of the solutions” to decarbonize the car sector. For him it would be “more fair to speed up the repair of the fleet at the same time” and “to see what we can do in terms of types of fuel”. “In the next decade, electric cars will not be enough to have a real decarbonization effect. (…) In roulette, you can’t bet everything on one color,” he concluded.
