Anyone who is constantly upset with politicians, raises their voices in business meetings and hits the steering wheel while driving is considered primitive and unreliable. It is believed that the superior keeps a cool mind. But keeping your nerve is overrated as a recent study shows.

Because getting angry can help you achieve your goals, at least in politics and when doing puzzles. This is suggested not only by the presidency of Donald Trump, a famous choleric, but also by the experiments of psychologists and neuroscientists at Texas A&M University.

Depending on the experiment, around 200 to 300 students were initially annoyed with “visual stimuli”, such as insults to the university football team. They were then asked to solve an anagram puzzle, for example. Compared to the students who were previously shown sad, neutral or funny pictures, the angry ones completed a particularly large number of puzzles in the allotted time.

In a ski computer game, they raced over the digital jump more skillfully than their fellow players. Anyone who is angry doesn’t necessarily behave like a brute like the Hulk. In another experiment, the angry test subjects cheated more often, which is beneficial for winning.

And actually it’s also logical: the purpose of emotions is that you can interact with the environment. Anger is a warning signal that something is wrong – that you are being threatened or disadvantaged. It puts the body on alert, heightens the senses and provides energy to solve the problem.

A survey by researchers of around 1,000 and 500 people about the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections showed that those who were angry about politics were more likely to vote. This applied to both opponents and supporters of Trump. Whether anger is good or bad depends on what you do with it.
