It may happen that the silent majority will remember the summer of 1994 not as the summer “when those 89 executioners escaped”, but as the summer “when even the refrigerators did not work in the Gailezer morgue and the corpse was rotting”, that is 30 years ago, on the 20th of 1994. wrote in August Saturdayreflecting on the particularly hot summer of that year.

“Kleinberga (the popular forecaster Rasma Kleinberga, who was in charge of weather reports on Latvian Television from 1965 to the 1990s – red.) claims that this summer is not the hottest that Latvia has experienced. The absolute maximum temperature in Latvia was observed on August 28, 1943 in Daugavpils: 36.4 degrees in the shade (on August 4, 2014, this record was broken in Ventspils with 37.8 degrees of heat in the shade – red.). And probably in the days when the temperature was not recorded on the territory of Latvia – in the Atlantic climate period – there were even warmer days. At the same time as the heat, broad-leaved forests, big susuri and other heat-lovers, maybe even forest cats and woodchucks arrived in Latvia. No one has yet proven their former existence here, however, it is possible that not only bison, hornbills and tarpans have visited our land in warmer times. Unfortunately, the age-old Latvian nation was not yet self-aware at that time, so there was no one to document the nation’s history, battles with forest cats, including exceptionally hot summers.
