Hotel explosion leaves at least 11 injured in Texas

At least 11 people were injured after an explosion in Hotel Sandmanin the city of Fort Worth, in the State of Texas, in the United States, this Monday, 8.

First aid company MedStar said one person was in critical condition, two were in serious condition and the rest had minor injuries. There’s a person missing. No deaths have been reported to date.

“We are working on a serious incident, please avoid downtown,” the Fort Worth Police Department said on social media X.

According to the local Fire Department, there was a gas leak, but it is not yet possible to confirm whether this was the cause of the explosion. Works were taking place at the site.

Fort Worth Councilman Carlos Flores posted on Facebook that there had been a gas leak and explosion. Natural gas is the same as piped gas in Brazilian cities. Generally, it is a mixture that contains methane and ethane gases.

Explosion in hotel in the city center

The accident occurred at the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Downtown Hotel. The building is close to the city hall and the city’s convention center. Parts of the building’s facade had been torn off in the explosion.

Fort Worth Communications Director Reyne Telles said “there was an explosion downtown” and “there was a plume of smoke seen higher than the skyscrapers.” Telles reported that there is debris scattered around the city hall area.

A witness reported to the newspaper Fort Worth Star-Telegram having seen people leaving the hotel with bloody faces and others on stretchers after the explosion. Other people also told the newspaper that there were family members at the hotel and that they were injured.

“When I heard the bang, I was in the middle of the street. Seeing it firsthand, my God, it was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen,” said Barbara Jacobs, 58 years old.

The Sandman Signature Fort Worth Downtown Hotel has 245 rooms and was built in 1920 as the “Wagoner Building,” named after cattle rancher and oilman William Thomas Wagoner. The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979.
