A ‘predatory and vile’ man was discovered to have committed child sex offenses after hotel workers raised the alarm.
In a case highlighting the crucial role of vigilance, Joel Dever, 22, has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison after hotel staff in Southport and Liverpool grew suspicious of his interactions with a 14-year-old girl.
Exploitation uncovered
dever’s exploitation of the schoolgirl unfolded throughout 2023.He met the 14-year-old through social media, beginning a sexual relationship that spanned over a year. He frequently booked hotel rooms for them in Southport and Liverpool.
But his actions didn’t go unnoticed. Police were alerted after hotel employees at one location became concerned about the girl’s age.
Guilty plea and sentencing
Dever, residing at Good Shephard Close in Croxteth, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to multiple child sexual offenses. These included six counts of sexual activity with a child, arranging or facilitating a child sex offense, and five counts of making indecent images of a child (category A, B, or C videos).
at Liverpool Crown Court, Dever received his sentence and a lifelong restraining order. He must also register on the Sex Offender Register for life.
Police commend vigilance
Detective Constable Soph Lowe,from Sefton Protecting Vulnerable People Unit,emphasized the importance of collaboration with local businesses.
“We work closely with hotels and bars to raise awareness of child sexual exploitation. Hotel staff in particular have been trained to identify the signs of when a child is being sexual exploited and how to report issues to police,” Det Con. Lowe said.
“In this instance, Dever’s predatory and vile behavior was found out when hotel staff at one establishment raised concerns about the girl’s age and called police.”
She praised the victim and her family for their courage throughout the investigation. “The victim and her family have shown immense courage and bravery throughout the investigation to reach this conviction,” Det Con. Lowe stated.
Det Con. Lowe hopes Dever’s imprisonment encourages other victims to report sex offenses and demonstrates that reports are taken seriously.
“I hope his imprisonment encourages other victims to come forward and report sex offences to us, and demonstrates that they can have confidence in us to take reports seriously. We will ensure offenders are put before the courts so that they can pay for their crimes,” she said.
