From Wednesday, November 1, 2023, the German War Graves Commission (VDK) will again be collecting for the preservation and care of German war graves abroad. Bundeswehr soldiers, representatives of the reservist association and civilian collectors ask for donations for the Volksbund at the front door, on the street and in cemeteries.

The VDK maintains and maintains more than 830 war cemeteries with more than 2.8 million war dead in 46 countries. What began as a citizens’ initiative to create and maintain resting places for the fallen and other war victims in the immediate aftermath of the First World War is now an internationally networked humanitarian organization. On behalf of the Federal Republic, it maintains the war graves in memory of the dead, as a reminder for the living, as peace education learning sites for future generations and as a call for peace, reconciliation and international understanding.

80 percent of the Volksbund is financed by member contributions and donations. The rest is covered by public funds from the federal and state governments. The annual fundraising therefore makes an important contribution.

Start on Münsterplatz

To mark the start of the collection, a central kick-off event on Münsterplatz on Monday, October 30, 2023 at 2 p.m. will draw attention to the campaign and the work of the German War Graves Commission. Also Mayor Dr. Ursula Sautter will take part in the event. The site’s oldest, Brigadier General Michael Oberneyer, as well as representatives of the Bundeswehr and the reservist association are also expected.
