The House of Representatives wants a monitoring system for zoonoses in pig farming. A motion by Tjeerd de Groot (D66) and Esther Ouwehand (PvdD) was passed on Tuesday.
De Groot and Ouwehand submitted the motion because, according to them, virologists warn against flu viruses that circulate in pig farming and can jump to humans. They find it irresponsible that there is no monitoring at all.
The government must come up with a monitoring system for zoonoses in pig farming as soon as possible, the politicians said in their motion. This was supported by a majority of the House.
Caroline van der Plas of BoerBurgerBeweging also filed a motion. She wants a mandatory vaccination against bird flu only if agreements have been made in a European context about the sale of poultry meat. She fears that without these agreements the market for poultry meat will be endangered. Her motion could not count on a majority in the House of Representatives.
