House Republicans Fail to Unite Around New Speaker, Leaving House Without Leader for 21st Day

by time news

House Republicans were unable to elect a new Speaker for the 21st consecutive day on Tuesday, as they elected and removed two speaker-designates within 10 hours. Majority Whip Tom Emmer was initially elected as the third speaker-designate in three weeks, but he removed himself from consideration after receiving a strong rebuke from former President Donald Trump. This prompted another election in which Rep. Mike Johnson was chosen as the fourth speaker-designate. However, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted three weeks ago, gained traction and received several votes. The lack of a speaker has prevented the House from conducting any legislative business and has caused major delays in passing important bills. Republicans are now considering a resolution that would temporarily empower Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick T. McHenry to oversee the House chamber until a permanent speaker is chosen.
