Earlier this week, a group of House Republicans unveiled a bill to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after Donald Trump. “Freedom. Prosperity. Power. This is what America stood for under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump – the best president of my life,” the sponsor. Guy Rashantler I have written In a post on X. “And that’s why I’m introducing legislation to change the name of Dulles to Donald J. Trump International Airport.” Unsurprisingly, Democrats panned the idea, calling it “ridiculous” and saying “no sane person” would support it. And now, they’ve offered a counterproposal they believe would be more appropriate: renaming a federal prison after the former president instead.

On Friday, representatives Gerry Connolly, Jared Moscovitch, and John Garamendi unveiled a bill to change the name of the Miami Federal Institution in Florida to the “Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution.” In a statement, Connolly said, “When our Republican colleagues introduced their bill to rename Dulles after Donald Trump, I said the more appropriate option would be to rename a federal prison … I hope our Republican friends will join us in giving Donald J. Trump The only honor he truly deserves.” Noting that Trump “likes to write his name in gold letters on all his buildings,” Moskovic said, “He has never had his name on a federal building before and as a public servant I just want to help the former president. Help us make this dream a reality.” Garamendi echoed, “Donald J. Trump is the first former president in U.S. history to be criminally indicted, with 88 counts in four criminal cases to date…I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to our former president, Donald J. Trump, than Rename the federal prison closest to Mar-a-Lago in his honor.”

In Florida, Trump faces charges of allegedly withholding national defense information and obstruction of justice, among other charges. The judge in the federal case has not yet set a trial date, but if one does happen – and if Trump is convicted – the former president faces up to 10 years in prison. (He has pleaded not guilty to those charges, and all other charges against him.) In another federal case, Trump was indicted for trying to overturn the 2020 election. At the state level, he has been charged in Georgia with trying to overturn that state’s election, and he also faces indictment in New York for allegedly falsifying business records related to him.
