House Republicans Seek Reset After Stalemate Continues in Speaker Race

House Republicans are seeking a reset after Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) failed once again in his attempt to secure the Speakership on Friday, prolonging a two-week-long stalemate that has thrown the chamber into chaos.

In the aftermath of Jordan’s third unsuccessful bid for the gavel, the GOP conference held a secret ballot vote, resulting in the decision to no longer support the Ohio Republican for Speaker. This decision has prompted several other GOP members to step forward as candidates, while others are considering entering the race or making calls to garner support for their Speaker bids.

To move forward, the Republican conference will conduct a candidate forum at 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening, followed by a vote to select a new Speaker-designate on Tuesday morning. Aspirants for the role must submit their names by noon on Sunday.

The conference’s previous attempt to temporarily empower Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) was shot down on Thursday. This proposal was seen by many as a last-ditch effort to resume House business while the Speaker race continued behind closed doors.

The developments in the Speaker race are ongoing, and updates will be provided below as they unfold.
