Does the approach of the end-of-year holidays bring cheer to households? Even if the enthusiasm is not really there, the latest monthly barometer from INSEE recorded an increase in November of three points compared to September and October, rising to 87 points against 84 points previously.

According to the institute, households seem to be more optimistic about the evolution of their personal financial situation and are more willing to make major purchases. “In November 2023, the share of households believing that it is appropriate to make major purchases will recover” after having declined slightly, underlines INSEE.

Same thing from a financial point of view. In fact, households also judge their savings capacity more favorably, “current and future”. The opportunity to save is above the long average: it rebounded by 8 points in November after dropping 8 points in October. Many believe that inflation will “continue to decline” in the coming months.

More surprising, “the share of households who consider that the standard of living in France will “improve over the next 12 months is increasing”, adds INSEE, specifying that “the proportion of households who consider that the standard of living in France has improved over the last 12 months” has also increased slightly.

However, this slight improvement is far from brilliant. All of the indicators still remain below their long-term average, as does the general indicator of household morale. Fears about the evolution of unemployment are on the rise again. This indicator gained 8 points after losing 2 points in October.
