A landlord in China is causing controversy by forcing a terminally ill cancer patient to vacate his apartment because it would lower apartment prices.

According to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 16th (local time), tenant A decided to rent an apartment in Beijing near the hospital where he visits for cancer treatment.

Landlord B took an active stance in selling the property and agreed to lease the apartment to A for a monthly rent of 5,500 yuan (about 1.04 million won), which was lower than the market price.

According to the contract, Mr. A and his wife were scheduled to reside there until mid-November, but in April, Mr. B suddenly notified them that he would be vacating the house within a week.

Mr. B, who found out later that Mr. A was terminally ill with cancer, took issue with this and decided to evict Mr. A and his wife.

Mr. B suspected that Mr. A and his wife were deliberately hiding the fact that he was suffering from cancer.

In response, Mr. A’s husband said, “It is true that I did not mention my wife’s (Ms. A’s) condition when I first looked for a lease,” but asked, “There is no reason to state (the fact that she had cancer) in the lease agreement. Also, is it really necessary for the tenant to inform the landlord of this?”

Mr. B claimed that “if Mr. A dies at home, the property will be branded a ‘haunted house’ and the value of the property could fall by 500,000 to 1 million yuan (approximately 94.85 million to 189.69 million won),” and asked Mr. A and his wife to sign a contract that included a clause promising to compensate for any decrease in the market value of the apartment due to their moving in.

Mr. and Mrs. A refused to sign this contract, stating that they would not vacate the property unless Mr. B provided compensation for the termination of the lease.

As the story spread rapidly through Chinese social media, a heated debate continued online.

“It’s so inhumane for a landlord to act like this,” one netizen said.

Another netizen argued, “It’s difficult to sell a property that is riddled with problems, but compensation for breach of lease agreements should be provided.”
