HOUSTON, Texas – Kaffeine Coffee, a beloved coffee shop located in Houston’s Third Ward, has fallen victim to yet another break-in, marking the eighth occurrence in just ten years. Owner Orgena Keener is now left to pick up the pieces once again as she navigates the aftermath of the recent burglary.

The incident occurred at Kaffeine Coffee’s address on 5225 Almeda Road, where criminals broke into the establishment and stole the cash register containing petty cash. Additionally, they ransacked the kitchen and even took off with freshly-made croissants. The shocking news was discovered by customers who arrived at the coffee shop on Friday morning, only to find the doors locked and a note explaining the temporary closure.

“It’s shocking,” expressed Chris Jackson, a regular customer of Kaffeine Coffee, upon learning about the break-in. “I wouldn’t want that to happen to me.”

A photograph shared on the business’s Instagram account showcased the shattered front door and the resulting glass debris, highlighting the extent of the damage. In the post’s comments section, Keener expressed her frustration and questioned the motives behind such acts.

“I often wonder what crooks be thinking about when they decide to shatter a business owner’s dream. I’m so irritated right now. I can spit,” read the caption accompanying the photo.

In the wake of this latest incident, Keener took to social media to express her consideration of moving out of the area due to the repeated burglaries. This revelation left loyal customers, such as Darryl Harper, stunned and saddened by the potential loss of a valuable asset in the community.

“I would miss her style of food, and if she does move, I hope she doesn’t move too far away,” commented Harper.

A look at ABC13’s Safety Tracker revealed that the area surrounding Kaffeine Coffee has experienced 77 burglaries within the past twelve months. This region includes prominent landmarks like the Texas Medical Center, Hermann Park, the Houston Zoo, and the Miller Outdoor Theater. Furthermore, neighboring areas such as Midtown, the Third Ward, and the NRG area have recorded higher burglary rates during the same period.

Interestingly, the area surrounding Rice University, situated to the west of Keener’s establishment, has encountered 53 burglaries in the past year.

This recent break-in serves as a disheartening reminder of the challenges faced by business owners in the Third Ward. A previous report from ABC13 in 2020 highlighted Kaffeine Coffee’s seventh burglary, during which Keener made a plea for increased police presence to deter criminals.

“If someone sees a police officer at Kaffeine Coffee all the time or somewhere near or across the street or whatever, they might have second thoughts,” Keener had stated.

The repeated incidents now raise concerns about the safety and security of establishments in the Third Ward, prompting residents and business owners to call for greater vigilance and protective measures in the community.
