Houthis Claim Downing Saudi F-15 Over Marib as Drone Intercepted Near Mecca

Yemeni Houthi forces announced Wednesday the downing of a Saudi F-15 fighter jet over Marib using a locally produced surface-to-air missile, while the Saudi-led military coalition reported intercepting an explosive drone targeting Mecca. The rival claims highlight escalating aerial warfare and heightening regional tensions across the peninsula.

The military escalation unfolded across multiple fronts on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, punctuated by competing announcements from military officials in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree stated in an online statement that the group’s armed forces shot down a Saudi F-15 fighter jet while it conducted hostile operations supporting military build-ups in the Marib governorate airspace.

Aerial Clashes Over Marib and Airstrike Claims

According to the Houthi military spokesman, the jet was targeted using a locally manufactured surface-to-air missile. Saree added that Houthi air defense units also engaged two separate Saudi combat formations consisting of F-15 and Typhoon aircraft in the skies above Marib as those planes searched for the wreckage of the downed fighter. The official asserted that local missiles forced the formations to withdraw.

The Houthi command accused the Saudi military of launching more than 450 airstrikes over the course of the week, utilizing F-15 and Typhoon jets taking off from Khamis Mushait and Taif military bases. The reported sorties struck targets across Taiz, Lahij, Al-Jawf, Hajjah, Marib, Saada, and Al-Bayda, resulting in civilian casualties, according to the group’s statements.

Contested Claims Surrounding Mecca and Regional Security

While the downing of the aircraft dominated reports from Yemen, Saudi military authorities countered with reports of a direct threat to holy sites. Royal Saudi Air Defense forces intercepted and destroyed an armed drone launched by the Houthi movement before it could enter the prohibited airspace of Mecca, according to a statement from Ministry of Defense spokesman Turki al-Maliki.

Al-Maliki described the drone launch as a disgraceful act intended to terrorize peaceful visitors and residents, emphasizing that the security of the Two Holy Mosques remains a red line. The coalition warned that it would not hesitate to take necessary and deterrent measures against Houthi behavior.

The Houthi movement categorically denied the Mecca attack allegations, dismissing them as fabrications and lies meant to deceive the public.

There is no danger from Yemen to the holy sites; our operations target its [the Saudi regime’s] oil facilities and military bases, and they are far away from the holy shrines. Yahya Saree, Military Spokesman, Ansar Allah (Houthis)

Broader Humanitarian Toll and International Reactions

The renewed military engagements compound an already severe humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Renewed fighting between the Houthis and the internationally recognized government has forced numerous people to flee their homes since the beginning of September alone, according to United Nations figures. Briefing an emergency UN Security Council meeting in New York, Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari noted that the situation around the Bab el-Mandeb strait has grown increasingly volatile as Houthi forces push along Yemen’s western coast.

Regional and international condemnation of the reported attack on Mecca followed swiftly despite the Houthi denials. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the incident in the strongest terms via social media, while the Organization of Islamic Cooperation issued formal rebukes denouncing the action.
