Popular legislation puts pressure on the state government in education policy. Now a citizens’ forum is speaking out in favor of the G9 – with reforms.

In the discussion about the future of high school education, a citizens’ forum set up by the green-black state government in Baden-Württemberg spoke out in favor of introducing a “modernized” nine-year high school with the option of turbo high schools with eight years of schooling. Baden-Württemberg is the only state that has stuck to the so-called G9, apart from 44 G8 model schools that were set up ten years ago by the then green-red government to mitigate parental protest.

At the beginning of the year, the state government came under heavy pressure due to a bill that has since been successfully submitted by popular proposal, which provides for the nationwide provision of G9 high schools. The citizens’ forum convened at the suggestion of the Greens was intended to help broaden the education policy debate.
