How and where to request the DGT environmental badge that will be necessary to circulate

With the entry into force of the Climate Change Law in 2023 the way in which we understand the circulation of vehicles in Spain will change. And it is that, from then on, in the cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants it will be mandatory to have an operational own low emission zone (ZBE), where some vehicles will not be able to circulate with the same freedom. Only hybrid cars (18.4% of total vehicles) and electric cars (3.9% of the total) will be able to do so, while combustion cars (without label, label B and label C) will have to deal with certain restrictions.

Up to 149 Spanish towns will be affected by this new regulation that could also regulate the use of environmental labels in Spanish cars that, until now, were only mandatory in cities like Madrid or Barcelona. The imposition of the new LEZ zones from 2023 will cause many city councils to begin to demand that vehicles that want to travel through the city use the environmental badge of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) to control their access.

But what is it, how does it work and what is the DGT environmental label for? How and where can I request this label for my vehicle? This is all you have to know.

What is the DGT environmental badge and what is it for?

The DGT environmental device “is a way of classifying vehicles based on their energy efficiency, taking into account their environmental impact. The intention is to distinguish those cars that are more respectful with the environment and restrict traffic of the most polluting vehicles in large cities.

In some cities, vehicles that do not have this environmental badge have circulation prohibited on public roads. For example, Madrid is one of the towns in which those cars that do not place this sticker in the lower right corner of the front windshield are penalized, according to its Mobility Ordinance.

The four environmental hallmarks of the DGT

There are four different DGT environmental badges depending on the type of vehicle owned. Those vehicles that do not belong to any of these groups are not entitled to no ‘sticker’“by not meeting the requirements to be labeled as a clean vehicle.”

  • 0 emissions label (blue): battery electric, extended range, plug-in hybrids with a range of 40 km or fuel cell

  • Eco Label (green and blue): plug-in electric vehicles with a range of less than 40 km, non-plug-in hybrids, powered by natural gas and gas or liquefied petroleum gas

  • Label C (green): gasoline cars and light vans registered as of January 2006 and diesel as of September 2015 and vehicles with more than eight seats and heavy vehicles, both gasoline and diesel, registered since 2014

  • Label B (yellow): gasoline cars and light vans registered since January 1, 2001 and diesel from 2006 and vehicles with more than eight seats and heavy vehicles, both gasoline and diesel, registered since 2006

How to apply for the DGT environmental label

Before requesting the DGT environmental label, you must know which label your vehicle is entitled to. If the imposed requirements are met, it will only be necessary to request and purchase the label at the Post Office next to your ID and driving license, in the network of workshops of the Spanish Confederation of workshops (CETRAA) and other networks of authorized workshops, at the headquarters of the Administrative Managers, at the Institute of Automotive Studies (IDEAUTO) or through the Ganvam association in the case of the fleets. This process costs about five eurosbut the price may vary depending on the shipping cost or seller’s policy.

This environmental label allows circulate through Spain. However, from the DGT they warn: «If you are going to circulate with your vehicle in Germany, Austria, Denmark, France or another country with an environmental cataloging system, you must inform yourself before going about whether it is necessary to obtain a badge in the country you are going to. you travel, how to do it and the criteria to be able to circulate ».
