The traffic light government recently celebrated the fact that it had managed to reach an agreement on key points for the so-called basic child security. But she still has no idea of how this project fits into the existing welfare state organization beyond nice slogans (“fight against child poverty”, “simplification”) – and how it clashes with the work of the job centers.

What else could explain that the Federal Employment Agency, as the responsible authority, now feels compelled to issue such a statement in the middle of preparing the cabinet decision? “Significant additional bureaucratic effort”, “unclarified”, “not realistic”, implementation by January 1, 2025 “unimaginable”, to name just a few key words.

Apparently, neither Family Minister Paus nor Labor Minister Heil have dealt in more detail with implementation issues. However, the job centers are already reaching their limits with rising unemployment and the help for more and more refugee families. A half-baked basic child security system will paralyze them. This project does not reduce poverty risks, it exacerbates them.
