How to Unlink Your Facebook and Instagram Accounts
For the past few years, the European Union has been a leading force in protecting online privacy. This has forced large companies like Meta to be more cautious when launching new social networks like Threads, and how they handle the data of their millions of users.
To unlink your Instagram account from Facebook, simply navigate to the Meta Account Center via the mobile app. Click the three horizontal lines in the top right corner, then access the gear icon to reach the settings. Select “More information in the Account Center” from the menu.
In this section, you’ll see a list of your connected Meta accounts. Scroll down to the “Accounts” option and delete the connections you no longer need. Remember, this only detaches the accounts, not deletes them entirely.
The process for unlinking your Facebook account from Instagram is similar. Open the Instagram app, click your profile photo at the bottom right, then select the three horizontal lines at the top right. Choose “Settings and privacy” from the menu.
From there, select “Account Center” and follow the same steps as above to unlink your accounts.
This option to unlink Facebook and Instagram accounts was introduced in response to the European Digital Markets Act, giving users greater control over their privacy and data processing by Meta.
Meta has also warned users that unlinking these accounts may limit certain features like Facebook Marketplace or Facebook Gaming.
