Any food that contains protein can cause people to have a Food Allergy, something that is more frequent in children. In the case of milk, it is very important to differentiate between lactose intolerance and allergy, indicates the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan).
The allergy to milk, which has caused the death of a 17-year-old girl in Ciudad Real, is caused by casein, lactoglobulin and lactalbumin. Specifically, the minor drank a “contaminated” coffee with milk, as she has related to her close environment.
Although symptoms may vary, the most common are cutaneous and digestive such as vomiting and diarrhea. This last symptom can cause us to confuse the allergy with lactose intolerance, since diarrhea occurs due to the inability to digest this component of milk.
The most serious reaction in a food allergy is anaphylactic. It affects several organs and systems and its most serious manifestation is anaphylactic shock. It can be fatal and to treat it it is necessary to completely eliminate the causative agent.

Two Types of Food Allergies
According to Aesan, under the Ministry of Consumption, there are two types of food allergies and their main difference is the time it takes for symptoms to appear.
The body’s response faster It is mediated by IgE antibodies. “It occurs after oral exposure to food -less than 2 hours- with a variety of symptoms, from mild (urticaria, digestive) to very serious,” they explain.
On the contrary, the slower it is not mediated by IgE antibodies. “They manifest above all with digestive symptoms that appear 2 or 48 hours after eating the food” to which one is allergic, they clarify.
