A major challenge to the implementation of the digital transformation in the agricultural sector is the large differences in the capabilities of small and large farms, as well as the different degree of digitalization in individual member states. Therefore, the most significant chances of achieving the much-needed balance between producing enough food in quantity and quality for consumers and at the same time fulfilling the UN goals for sustainable development is related to with accelerated and widespread penetration of innovations and digital technologies into agricultural practice. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Alexander Yotsev in his speech on the theme: “Innovative Agri-Food Sector for Food Security and Climate Protection” during his participation in the 32nd edition of The Economic Forum, which took place in the city of Karpacz, Poland.

It is investing in knowledge, innovation and training that gives farmers the tools they need to increase their productivity and be sustainable and competitive, the Deputy Minister pointed out.

Bulgaria considers that at the national level in agriculture, an appropriate tool for the green transition is the increase in the share of areas under organic production and the transition to it. There is also potential for the use of carbon certification tools and schemes in agricultural production. A good opportunity to contribute to this transition is to improve the sustainability and diversity of short supply chains, which have a number of socio-economic and environmental benefits.

Financial incentives for investments in innovative practices and technologies have an important contribution to strengthening the interest of agricultural producers in scientific achievements and innovations. said Deputy Minister Yotsev. He pointed out that in order to increase the sector’s contribution to the green transition, it should be supported in a systematic way for the faster and more affordable entry of the bioeconomy into the sector, as well as work to improve production processes and the general management of food waste for better resource efficiency and a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

The common challenges we are facing at the present time show the need for even closer cooperation and understanding between the peoples of Europe, said Alexander Yotsev.

The Economic Forum is the largest and most important economic platform in Central and Eastern Europe for the exchange of opinions and ideas on the most pressing economic and political topics for the region.
