The tower is located in an important strategic location in Jordan, in the far northeast, at the intersection of the Kingdom’s borders with Syria and Iraq.
Purpose Little is known about the site, but it is near the Tanf base across the Syrian border that houses a small number of American troops. The base has played a key role in the war against ISIS and has also played a role in the American strategy to contain Iranian military expansion in eastern Syria.
Tower 22 is located close enough to U.S. forces at al-Tanf that it could help support those forces as well as be used to combat Iranian-backed militants in the area and help troops monitor remaining ISIS members.

Little is known about the tower. It is not known exactly how many American soldiers were in Tower 22, what kind of weapons and air defenses were inside, or what exactly happened in the last attack.
A Jordanian government official said the attack targeted a US base in Syria near the border and did not take place on Jordanian territory.
