The birth of Makinta Bialti
The story of the first makinta began in the 20s of the last century, when Alfonso Bialti watched his wife doing laundry, and a brilliant idea came to him.
The woman used a machine that was available before washing machines were invented. In fact, it was a huge pot, into which water and soap were poured through a central pipe. This washing method made Alfonso think of a similar method for making coffee, and he began to imagine how he could make a suitable vessel.
He started working on the idea in his workshop in the city of Piedmont (if you haven’t already guessed, this all takes place in Italy). He managed to produce all kinds of versions of the aluminum tool, until in 1933 he reached the final result. This was the birth of Macintosh Bialti, and of Macintoshes in general.
How was the Bialti logo – the man with the mustache – created?
Alfonso invented the Macintosh, and he deserves all the credit for the brilliant idea, but it was his son Renato who spread the product around the world and made it a great success. In 1946, he took the reins of the company.
At a later stage, a talented and well-known cartoonist drew it, and this is how the company’s famous logo was created. This caricature, of the mustachioed Renato Bialti, appears on the company’s Macintosh series to this day, and has become an integral part of the Italian brand.

The history of Makinta Bialti has been going on for decades, and what is most amazing: the first invention is still the most popular and best-selling.
You understand correctly – the same model invented by Alfonso in 1933 is used by the company (and other companies) to manufacture macintoshes to this day. There are all kinds of models on the market, but the original elements remain unchanged: 4 aluminum elements, replaceable seal, handle and octagonal shape.
In 1996, the Bialti machine set a Guinness World Record, when it was the only device that managed to produce 100 cups of coffee at once.
In 2010, it was presented at the Shanghai Exhibition, as one of the ten Italian inventions that changed the world.
By the way, in English Makinta is called Moka Pot. The word mocha comes from a city of the same name, located on the coast of the Red Sea in Yemen, one of the first and most important coffee production areas. Even today, very high quality Arabica coffee beans are grown in the city of Moka.
