The Notebook of an Alcoholic Woman sells out Czech cinemas and the interest in the film shows that alcoholism is a hot topic in the Czech Republic. The five-part podcast Aktuálně.cz Na plech is also dedicated to him. Each episode describes a specific topic that addicts face on their way to abstinence. The guests – recovered alcoholics – are not afraid to talk about unsatisfied life, relapse, trauma, own mistakes and self-love.
How do you know if you are addicted to alcohol? What happens when you stop drinking? How to talk about abstinence with those around you? These are the topics of the Na plech podcast series, in which people with experience with addiction and recovery coach Zuzana Nott appear.
In the first part, we present the story of Katka, who began to feel lonely when she moved abroad due to her partner’s work. The vision of living together in a new country did not come true according to her imagination. She began to drink away the feeling of emptiness with alcohol. In the piece, which received a nomination for this year’s Journalism Award, she reveals when she realized she was addicted to alcohol and what helped her abstain for almost four years.

Podcast Na plech
- A five-part series about alcohol addiction and how to get out of it. The program is accompanied by editor Klára Elšíková and recovery coach Zuzana Nott. It will be published every Wednesday.
- In the podcast, we present the approach of recovery coaching, a relatively new system of care for addicts in the Czech Republic. It is based on a non-hierarchical relationship between the addicted client and the coach, who himself has processed experience with addiction and accompanies the client on his recovery journey. Recovery coaching is a trauma-sensitive approach that is based on the belief that the client himself is the greatest expert on his addiction.
- The guest of the podcast is recovery coach Zuzana Nott and people who have experience with addiction.
- Episode 1 of the podcast: How do we recognize that we are addicted, when to seek help and what basic steps to take for successful abstinence.
- Part 2 of the podcast: What starts to happen when an addicted person stops drinking, why abstinence is only the beginning of the journey and how to approach the unpleasant feelings that start to surface.
- Episode 3 of the podcast: Telling the truth about abstinence, what reactions to expect from those around you, and what phrases to use when you don’t want to confide in yourself with the real reason.
- Episode 4 of the podcast: Drinking again, or relapse and relapse. How to behave in the event of a relapse and how to perceive it.
- Episode 5 of the podcast: Long-term abstinence. How the life of a person who abstains for several years changes. Influence on the physical, psychological and spiritual side.
“>”Alcohol addiction is a symptom. It has much deeper connections and causes. If we can process them and accept them holistically and make changes in our lives, we can definitely heal the addiction. It’s not a lifelong trait,” recovery coach Zuzana Nott, who appears in all five episodes, says in the podcast.
“>Addiction, according to Nott, is one way we deal with unprocessed pain. It could be a lack of emotional attachment from childhood or a stressful issue in adulthood, for example. “There is no ‘addiction gene.’ Rather, where and how we grow up and live plays a role,” he says, explaining why he disagrees with the concept of addiction as a disease.
