how Emmanuel Macron tries to depoliticize the debate

by time news

The subject touches the heart. For the moment, however, it should be kept very low noise. Will the “end of life” be the great societal reform of Emmanuel Macron’s second term or a simple evolution of existing systems, in particular the Claeys-Leonetti law of 2016? Impossible to know as the executive has been blowing hot and cold for a few weeks.

Emmanuel Macron’s campaign promise, the citizens’ convention on the “end of life” was put on track on Tuesday, October 25, with the start of the draw for the 150 French men and women who will constitute it. At the same time, the two delegate ministers, Olivier Véran, in charge of democratic renewal, and Agnès Firmin-Le Bodo, in charge of territorial organization and the health professions, began a cycle of consultations with the representatives of the political groups of the Assembly and Senate (Republicans do not participate, as well as socialist senators).

The different bricks are therefore beginning to be put in place. Politically, however, the file seems to have been put back under the damper. “We must approach this debate with great humility.summarizes Mr. Véran. We are not in the conquest of a right or in a political fight which would lead to a victory or a defeat. We are in a reflection that touches the intimate of each one. »

For the past few weeks, the Elysée has accelerated and then stalled. Voluntary remarks made by the President of the Republic during the presentation of the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor to Line Renaud, on Friday September 2, had first leaked: “Now is the time to do it… We will do it. » Already, during a campaign trip to Fouras (Charente-Maritime) on March 31, he had replied to a woman that the Belgian model seemed interesting to her. At the start of the school year, some of his relatives did not hesitate to raise the perilous hypothesis of a referendum and praised this future reform as the great societal progress of the second five-year term.

No referendum

The mood cooled this fall. Those close to Emmanuel Macron now say they fear too much politicization and promise that the Head of State will not decide before the end of the consultations and will not give his personal opinion, even if he has “was touched in his private life by this question”, say his relatives. A way of not waking up the divisions. “The idea is to keep the presidential figure at a distance because otherwise it politicizes the whole file, we have to let the discussions live so that the solution appears by itself”hopes one of his advisers.
