The new DFL managing directors have their first day at work. Two hitherto relatively unknown managers are under observation.

The management of the German Football League in Frankfurt is traditionally viewed with skepticism by the 36 professional clubs. This is especially true for the new duo, who have their first day of work on Monday (today) because Marc Lenz and Steffen Merkel are an internal solution from the second row. Predecessor Axel Hellmann certifies the two 37-year-olds a high level of expertise and also complete independence, which he and Oliver Leki could not have. “They are in no way burdened in terms of club politics,” said Hellmann of the German Press Agency.

He is certain that “all 36 clubs will attest to the fact that they are knowledgeable and don’t start with any club glasses,” emphasized Hellmann. The CEO of Eintracht Frankfurt had temporarily taken over the management of the DFL together with Leki from Freiburg for six months. “The only thing that could have always been a disadvantage in this interim management was perhaps the club perspective,” said Hellmann, who had his last DFL working day last Friday. But that didn’t play a role in “a single decision,” he assured.

Lenz and Merkel were promoted at short notice because the DFL Supervisory Board and Executive Committee had previously received a number of rejections. It was “more of an advantage for both of them not to go in with this burden,” said Hellmann: “Because everyone we would have taken out of the league” would have struggled with the assumption that he was “from some camp”.

Hellmann also said of Merkel and Lenz: “They have been involved in all key issues in recent years and are so knowledgeable and competent in the main content, media and strategic issues that you couldn’t be more.” The two 37-year-olds were already active in the management of the DFL before their promotion.
