Magdeburg The corridors are narrow and the equipment is outdated. In addition, the clean room at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg is impractically located on the top floor. Until recently, director Jörg Vierhaus had to fear for his life’s work. Everything here pointed to a slow end. His research facility for chip production seemed too expensive and underutilized. Then came Intel.
The US technology group wants to invest 30 billion euros in two plants in the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, a third of which will be contributed by the state. Intel boss Pat Gelsinger recently announced this in the presence of Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
