A study by the International Labor Organization (ILO) detailed the average weekly work time in several countries in the region, including Ecuador.

While the possibility of an hourly contract is being discussed in Ecuador, a proposal included in the April referendumin other countries in the region there is debate about whether employees are working too many hours per day or week.

Only last year, in April 2023, President Gabriel Boric promulgated a law that reduces the work week in Chile from 45 to 40 hours, an initiative that will be implemented gradually over a period of five years.

The truth is that data from the International Labor Organization (ILO) reveal the average time that people spend in their offices in several Latin American countries.

According to the ranking, Ecuador is among the countries with the lowest average weekly hours. While several Latin American countries maintain an average of between 36 to 44 hours of work per week.

The ILO survey divides the data into average weekly working time and prevalence of excessive working hours. According to the study, which took into account 16 countries in the region, Ecuador has an average weekly working hours of 38.4, being one of the lowest. In comparison, Colombia has an average of 44.2 working hours per week.

Within the ILO data, there are countries that reach an average of 54 hours of work per week. On the other hand, the report details that Ecuador has 23% of employees working more than 49 hours per week. In Peru, this rate reaches 32%, and in Honduras it reaches 29%.
