Some 204,000 Israeli families face difficulties in purchasing their own home and also struggle to pay rent each month.

This information was presented at the Forum on Public Housing together with Knesset Member Yasmin Sachs Friedman of the Yesh Atid party.

Jerusalem has proven to be the most difficult place to find housing, followed by cities such as Haifa, Netanya, Ashdod, Be’er Sheva, Bat Yam and Tel Aviv, where families are forced to move frequently in search of affordable housing in the rental market. At the same time, they receive minimal assistance from the state in the amount of 700 to 1,200 shekels, but this amount does not correspond to market rental rates and does not provide any respite for these families.

The situation has been worsened by sharp increases in rental prices across the country, the effects of past conflicts and the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the start of the pandemic, approximately 180 thousand families were eligible for state rental assistance, which represents a 10% increase in the number of those in need of such support.

Vulnerable groups include single mothers, elderly people, people with disabilities, large families and those living below the poverty line. As the crisis deepens, the Housing and Treasury Departments have yet to present a comprehensive plan to address the public housing shortage, leaving many families homeless.
